Section titled “Cinco de Mayo”Cinco de Mayo is observed on May 5 and commemorates Mexico’s victory over the Second French Empire at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It is often mistaken for Mexican Independence Day, which is celebrated on September 16.
In the United States, the day is more widely associated with Mexican-American culture and has been popularized through commercial advertising and public celebrations. In Mexico, observances are often ceremonial, including military parades and battle reenactments.
