Community Identity on SimpleX
Section titled “Community Identity on SimpleX”In IrregularChat, identities and connections are what make the community a community. We are NOT anonymous to each other here — but “not anonymous” does not mean “legal name.”
Set your chat profile name to the name the community knows you by — the same display name you use on Signal or other community spaces. That can be a persistent handle or callsign, not necessarily your legal name; what matters is that people recognize you as you across the community. (Doing public-facing work and want a lower-identity presence? See the incognito note below and the informal All Topics group.)
SimpleX lets you keep multiple chat profiles in the same app. That’s the right way to maintain a separate identity for OTHER communities you join on SimpleX. Use your IrregularChat community name here, and create a different profile for unrelated groups if you want to keep those separate. One app, your choice of identities.
Step 1 — Install SimpleX Chat
Section titled “Step 1 — Install SimpleX Chat”Download the app for your device:
- iOS: App Store
- Android (Google Play): play.google.com

- Desktop (macOS/Windows/Linux): simplex.chat/downloads/
Step 2 — Set Your Chat Profile Name
Section titled “Step 2 — Set Your Chat Profile Name”Open SimpleX Chat and set up your profile:
- Tap your profile icon (usually in the top-left or settings)
- Set your chat profile name to the name the community knows you by (the same display name you use elsewhere in IrregularChat)
- You can optionally add a profile photo
Tip: If you want to participate in other SimpleX communities with a different identity, create a second profile in the same app and switch between them. Each profile is separate.
Step 3 — Link Your Account via the Community Portal
Section titled “Step 3 — Link Your Account via the Community Portal”You link your account inside the Entry room — a checkpoint before the community groups. You do not need to DM the bot directly (new members have no direct contact with it yet).
- Go to https://irregulars.io/simplex and log in with your community account (SSO — the same login you use for other IrregularChat services)
- Join the Entry room using the link on that page (tap it to open SimpleX, then tap Join)
- Back on the portal, copy your 3-word link code (looks like
apple-river-sunset) — it works once and expires after 30 minutes - In the Entry room, send your code as a message:
!linkme apple-river-sunset(replace with your code), or- just the three words by themselves
- The bot verifies you right there, then sends you a connection request (it’s from IrregularBot — that’s expected). Tap Accept, and it adds you to the community’s starter groups automatically.
A community admin is in the Entry room too, so you’ll be helped even if the bot is busy.
Step 4 — Accept Group Invitations
Section titled “Step 4 — Accept Group Invitations”After linking, IrregularBot will send you group invitations. You must tap Join on each invitation in the SimpleX app for it to take effect — they are not silent auto-joins.
⚠️ Important: If you connected to the bot while in Incognito mode, group invitations will fail. Turn Incognito mode off for the bot connection and reconnect before linking.

Community Etiquette
Section titled “Community Etiquette”- Use your real community name — Set your profile name to the name we know you by
- Be respectful — Treat others as you’d like to be treated
- Keep topics on-topic — Stay focused in group discussions
- Use breakout rooms — Start side conversations in dedicated groups with
!breakout <topic> - Don’t share group links publicly — Keep our community private
Privacy & Technical Notes
Section titled “Privacy & Technical Notes”End-to-end encryption: All SimpleX messages are encrypted with perfect forward secrecy, even in groups.
Bridging: If Signal ↔ SimpleX bridging is enabled in the future, messages will be forwarded between platforms. This breaks end-to-end encryption at the bridge. You’ll be notified if bridging becomes active.
Self-hosted relay: IrregularChat may operate its own SimpleX relay server for improved reliability. The default public relays work fine to get started.
